An insurmountable gap
The Internet is perhaps the best example of blessing and the curse rolled into one. From one standpoint, it has brought certain possibilities you could only dream about in the past and has given a fighting chance to everyone. A chance to show the world who you are, what you can, what you think, and what you feel. Thanks to the Internet, the world has indeed become a smaller and nearer place. It has also enabled you to get in touch with almost anybody, including the persons who were but unreachable before (at least, in theory).
For me, the Internet is still very much a necessary evil. Although I’m into music and art for several decades now, so far I didn’t have many chances in real life to present my work to the “right crowds'' and to mingle with the milieu. Due to an unbreakable bond with my family and financial limits, I never ventured into abandoning my hometown, which had probably cost me some possible options and opportunities. For the same reasons, I don’t have much choice but to embrace the Internet along with its good and bad sides.
All things considered, it seems that the time where anyone can get their fifteen minutes has finally arrived. Unfortunately, this is mostly only a semblance. Everyone is fighting for their positions, including the ones who already have numerous advantages. So is still largely all about luck and circumstances.
Recently, I’ve marked two years of active membership on an international forum VI-Control.net. For those unacquainted, this is one of the biggest online communities that gathers musicians, composers, producers, and other people from the music industry. This includes many well-known names, apparently even those working for Hollywood.:)
Judging by the number of positive reactions I’ve received for my posts and compositions, I have a very good rating there, especially for a newer member. However, all that it takes is one small misstep to verify the ageless “homo homini lupus” phrase and to confirm that there is still an insurmountable gap between the people coming from different circles and circumstances.
At the beginning of the year, I have clumsily written a post that invoked a lot of negative reactions. I admit to being wrong in my claims, but I was also somewhat understandably frustrated. While you read about the experiences, reputation, success, and the available means of those coming from vastly better circumstances, it is even more difficult to admit to your shortcomings and limitations. Although I firmly believe in my talents and potentials, society is relentlessly demanding proof of someone’s qualities. However, obtaining one is not equally easy nor equally fair for every person, and even the most democratic media out there still isn’t a fool-proof answer in this quest.
Though we’re living in a world where everything seems just a click away, the real truth for most remains: “so near yet so far away”.
